Zwei meisterhafte Musiker weben ein intimes Klanggeflecht, das den Raum mit der Wärme historischer Saiteninstrumente und dem anhaltenden Duft uralter Harze erfüllt. Für Gäste, die besonders empfindlich auf Rauch reagieren, wird diese Veranstaltung nicht empfohlen.

„A Different Shape of Viol“ ist eine Sammlung originaler Kompositionen für die Bass-Viola da Gamba, die sich von dem meist mit dem Instrument assoziierten barocken Klang und Stil lösen. Der Zuhörer erlebt eine neue, frische Annäherung an den bezaubernden Klang der Gambe – eine Brücke zwischen Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft.

Chris Dahlgren (*1961, New York City) ist ein US-amerikanischer Jazzbassist und Multiinstrumentalist. Er begann mit Cello, wechselte später zum Bass und studierte Jazz sowie Komposition bei namhaften Lehrern wie Anthony Braxton und La Monte Young. Er spielte mit Künstlern wie Joe Lovano, Red Rodney und Over the Rhine. Sein Debütalbum Slow Commotion erschien 1996. Seit 1998 ist er Teil des Jazz Mandolin Project und leitet die Band Lexicon. Seit 2003 unterrichtet er an der Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler“ Berlin.

Pedro Alcàcer Doria (*1982, Mexiko-Stadt) wuchs in einer musikalischen Familie auf und studierte Jazz- und klassische Gitarre sowie Komposition. Nach seinem Abschluss an der Escuela Nacional de Música-UNAM spezialisierte er sich in Spanien und Deutschland auf Renaissance- und Barocklaute. Er arbeitete mit renommierten Dirigenten wie Gabriel Garrido und Marco Mencoboni und trat international auf. Heute lebt er in Berlin und ist in der Alten Musik aktiv.

Labdanum ist ein duftendes Harz aus den Zistrosenarten Cistus ladanifer und Cistus creticus. Es hat ein tiefes, amberartiges Aroma mit Noten von Erde, Honig, Leder und Moschus und wird seit Jahrhunderten in Parfümerie, Räucherwerk und Medizin geschätzt. Seine komplexe Duftstruktur verleiht orientalischen und Chypre-Düften Wärme und Beständigkeit. Früher wurde es durch das Auskämmen aus Ziegenbärten gewonnen.

“A Different Shape of Viol’ is a set of original compositions for solo bass Viola da Gamba that break away from the Baroque sound and style mostly associated with the instrument. The listener is offered a new and fresh approach to this instrument’s enchanting sound that brings the past, present and future together.

Chris Dahlgren (*1961, New York City) is an American jazz bassist and multi-instrumentalist. He started with the cello before switching to bass and studied jazz and composition under renowned teachers like Anthony Braxton and La Monte Young. He has performed with artists such as Joe Lovano, Red Rodney, and Over the Rhine. His debut album, Slow Commotion, was released in 1996. Since 1998, he has been part of the Jazz Mandolin Project and leads the band Lexicon. Since 2003, he has taught ensemble playing at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin.

Labdanum is a fragrant resin derived from the rockrose species Cistus ladanifer and Cistus creticus. With a deep, amber-like aroma featuring earthy, honey, leather, and musk notes, it has been valued for centuries in perfumery, incense, and medicine. Its rich scent gives oriental and chypre fragrances warmth and longevity. Historically, it was even harvested by combing it from the beards of goats.
