DJ Extended feat. Kazimieras Jušinskas is an electroacoustic project of two like-minded individuals, offering a wide palette of unconventionally produced sounds and sonic surprises.
K. Gikas, on turntables, and K. Jušinskas, on saxophone, create a fusion between acoustic and electronic sounds incorporating soft noise, interactive musical conversations, elegant melodic lines, glitch music, rhythmic loops, and extreme extended performance techniques for both instruments.
Historically, turntables were primarily used for listening to music, but in recent decades they have evolved into expressive instruments with a broad range of possibilities. These include interactive qualities and timbral possibilities, making them a medium through which musicians can express themselves. Contemporary composers such as John Cage, Bernhard Lang, and Gabriel Prokofiev have integrated the turntable into contemporary music in a playful yet sophisticated manner. Despite the direct control an artist has over the turntable, it can also be manually transformed into a looper, sampler, complex generative sound process etc.
This improvisational music duo is now in its sixth year. The members are classmates who graduated together from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (LMTA) with a Master’s degree in contemporary music and improvisation. They are part of the Improdimensija movement, which has inspired the rise of the improvisational music scene in Lithuania.
The duo have performed at various festivals and other occasions both within and outside Lithuania, and have toured in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Poland. Each performance by DJ Extended feat. Kazimieras Jušinskas is unique, capturing their spontaneous creativity. They are currently working to encapsulate this creativity in their second album.
