With Batila’s new acoustic EP « In light », you drift into a place between memory and imagination – a space where rhythm soothes wounds it never caused, and melodies heal hearts they’ve never broken. Your journey begins in the Congo, with instantly recognizable rumba notes and percussive warmth – familiar yet new. As the voyage unfolds, the sound gently migrates westward: traces of bossa nova, subtle electric guitar echoes, and melodic textures that blur borders. It’s a careful blend of old Congolese rumba, spoken word, and modern storytelling, sung in Lingala, French, and English – a truly international language of emotion.
The sound is warm, round, poetic, but also hypnotic – like the rhythm of a ritual, guiding you into a quiet trance. That trance begins the moment you embark – carried by « In light », repetitive rhythms that sound like train wheels rolling through time. This song is carried by a distinctly Pan-African spirit, enriched by the presence of exceptional artists: Nigerian jazz trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist Etuk Ubong, virtuoso percussionist Huguette Tolinga from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the unmistakable Neo-Soul voice of Ghana’s Susan Augustt.
Each song offers intertwined melodies with intricate polyrhythms and counter-tempos that occasionally sound reversed, achieving an elegant complexity while remaining simple and seamless. This EP doesn’t just play in your ears; it travels through your whole body – a melody for those who seek calm in the middle of chaos, a sonic medicine for the senses, a ritual for balance. Batila offers a rare form of serenity: music as healing, rhythm as memory.
In anticipation of the full trance of his upcoming album Mpeve, meaning spirit in Kikongo, this new EP opens a window into Batila’s evolving sonic universe. In Mpeve, Batila blends Afrobeat, soul, reggae, rumba-rock, and Congolese rhythms into a hypnotic, transformative experience, backed by his ever-evolving band The DreamBus.

Inspired by jazz greats and the sounds of the elements water, wind and fire, trumpeter and composer Etuk Ubong calls his music “Earth Music”. Born in Lagos in 1992, he joins the tradition of fiery, Afrobeat-rooted, hard-bop influenced trumpeters that goes back to Tunde Williams, who in turn was a founding member of Fela Kuti’s seminal band Africa 70 in the 1960s.
In the bands of famous musicians such as Victor Olaiya, Femi Kuti and Buchi, the Lagos-based artist was able to live and develop his passion for music. Etuk Ubong’s style captivates with urgent tempos, powerful horn charts and highly explosive socio-political lyrics. In short: rousing, overwhelming.
His compositions reflect his life philosophy of peace and love for humanity: “one heart and spirit”. Ubong released his EP Miracle in 2016 with another quartet of Nigerian artists. Following the success of the EP, he released his debut album Tales of Life in 2017. His second full album Africa Today was edited in 2020 on Night Dreamer. Etuk Ubong is also the owner of TRUTH nightclub, currently one of the hottest clubs in the heart of Lagos since the demise of the legendary Fela Kuti’s Shrine.

Avec son nouvel EP acoustique In Light, Batila nous transporte dans un espace entre mémoire et imagination – un lieu où le rythme apaise des blessures qu’il n’a jamais causées, et où les mélodies réparent des cœurs qu’elles n’ont jamais brisés.
Le voyage commence au Congo, avec des notes de rumba immédiatement reconnaissables et une chaleur percussive – familière et pourtant nouvelle. Au fil du parcours, le son migre doucement vers l’Ouest : traces de bossa nova, échos subtils de guitare électrique et textures mélodiques qui estompent les frontières. C’est un mélange subtil de rumba congolaise traditionnelle, de spoken word et de narration moderne, chanté en lingala, français et anglais – une véritable langue internationale de l’émotion.
Le son est chaud, rond, poétique et hypnotique, comme le rythme d’un rituel guidant vers une transe douce. Cette transe commence dès l’instant où l’on embarque – portée par In Light, des rythmes répétitifs semblables aux roues d’un train à travers le temps.
Ce morceau est empreint d’un esprit panafricain distinct, enrichi par des artistes exceptionnels : le trompettiste et multi-instrumentiste nigérian Etuk Ubong, la percussionniste virtuose Huguette Tolinga de la République Démocratique du Congo, et la voix néo-soul inimitable du Ghana, Susan Augustt.
