Since 2012, the ensemble ~su has been developing a radical yet poetic form of contemporary jazz – rooted in Korean tradition and open to free improvisation. The starting points are GuGak (classical Korean music), Mu-A.k (shamanic music) and Samulnori (percussion traditions), which are not merely referenced here but transformed. Together with saxophonist and composer Peter Ehwald (German Jazz Prize for Woodwinds 2026), So Sol-I (vocals, k’kwaenggwari), Kim Bo-Sung (janggu, jing) and Shin Hyo Jin (various traditional percussion instruments), an intense sonic space emerges, blending saxophone, voice and a multitude of Korean instruments – immediate, precise and organic all at once.
Their unique shared ‘hoheup’ – the synchronized breathing of the musicians – transforms all differences into a shared musical flow. The result is music that oscillates between fragility and eruptive power: visionary, humorous, sometimes punk-inspired, always surprisingly vibrant. A concert that blends ritual, improvisation and the present.
At the Panda Theatre in Berlin, they will perform a double concert with the duo Laura Robles & Carla Boregas, an intercultural contemporary project with an extraordinary line-up of its own. Carla Boregas is a Brazilian musician and sound artist. Drawing on a meditation of sound in its vibratory and evocative dimensions, she combines synthetic and acoustic instrumentation to sculpt captivating sonic environments. Laura Robles Marcuello, born in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) and raised in Lima, Peru, is one of the most important cajon players in the world. Renowned for her virtuosity, her radical rhythmic approach, and her deep research into Afro-Peruvian traditions, she has become a unique voice in contemporary jazz, improvisation, and experimental music. Their duo operates at the intersection of improvisation, avant-garde jazz and trans-traditional music.

Seit 2012 entwickelt das Ensemble ~su eine radikale, zugleich poetische Form von zeitgenössischem Jazz – verwurzelt in koreanischer Tradition und offen für freie Improvisation. Ausgangspunkt sind GugAk (klassische koreanische Musik), MuAk (Schamanenmusik) und Samulnori, die hier nicht zitiert, sondern transformiert werden. Mit dem Saxophonisten und Komponisten Peter Ehwald (Gewinner des Deutschen Jazzpreis 2026, Kategorie Holzblasinstrumente), SO Sol-I (Gesang, K’kwaenggwari), KIM Bo-Sung (Janggu, Jing) und SHIN Hyo Jin (multiples traditionelles Schlagwerk) entsteht ein intensiver Klangraum aus Saxophon, Stimme und einer Vielzahl koreanischer Instrumente – unmittelbar, präzise und organisch zugleich.
Ihr einzigartiges gemeinsames hoheup – das synchrone Atmen der Musiker*innen – überführt alle Unterschiede in einen gemeinsamen musikalischen Fluss. Daraus entsteht Musik, die zwischen Zerbrechlichkeit und eruptiver Kraft pendelt: visionär, humorvoll, manchmal punkig, immer überraschend lebendig. Ein Konzert zwischen Ritual, Improvisation und Gegenwart.
Im Panda Theater in Berlin spielen sie mit einem ihrerseits außergewöhnlich besetzten interkulturellen zeitgenössischen Projekt – dem Duo Laura Robles & Carla Boregas – ein Doppelkonzert. Carla Boregas ist eine brasilianische Musikerin und Klangkünstlerin. Ausgehend von der Auseinandersetzung mit Klang in seinen schwingenden und assoziativen Dimensionen kombiniert sie synthetische und akustische Instrumente, um fesselnde Klangwelten zu erschaffen. Laura Robles Marcuello, geboren in Eswatini (ehemals Swasiland) und aufgewachsen in Lima, Peru, ist eine der bedeutendsten Cajón-Spielerinnen der Welt. Bekannt für ihre Virtuosität, ihren radikalen rhythmischen Ansatz und ihre tiefgreifende Auseinandersetzung mit afro-peruanischen Traditionen, ist sie zu einer einzigartigen Stimme im zeitgenössischen Jazz, in der Improvisation und in der experimentellen Musik geworden. Ihr Duo bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle von Improvisation, Avantgarde-Jazz und transtraditioneller Musik.
